orrery privacy policy
Effective 2026-08-16
What orrery does
orrery saves the papers, code repositories, articles, and AI-chat conversations you choose to capture into a private research knowledge graph. Captures happen only when you click save, or on domains where you explicitly enabled auto-capture. AI-chat pages (chatgpt.com, claude.ai, gemini.google.com) are never auto-captured — saving a conversation is always a deliberate click.
What we collect
- Your Google account email and name, used only to sign you in and own your data.
- The readable text, title, and URL of pages you capture (sanitized in the extension before upload; no scripts, no styles, no cookies from the page).
- Public metadata about captured papers and repositories fetched from OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, and GitHub.
- Summaries, claims, and relationships generated by an AI model from your captured text to build your graph.
What we do NOT do
- No analytics or tracking in the extension. No ads, ever.
- No browsing-history collection — the extension sees only pages you capture.
- No selling or sharing of your data. Your graph is visible only to your account.
- No AI training on your content: captured text is sent to our AI provider (Google Gemini) solely to summarize and connect YOUR sources, under API terms that do not use it for model training.
Storage & security
Data is stored in MongoDB Atlas (US region) with nightly encrypted backups retained 14 days. Transport is HTTPS everywhere. Sign-in uses short-lived tokens (15 minutes) with rotating refresh tokens that are stored hashed. Server logs never contain page content or tokens.
Your controls
- Export: download everything (projects, sources, connections) as JSON from the account menu.
- Delete: deleting a source, a project, or your whole account removes the data and its derived summaries/connections permanently (account deletion also revokes all sessions).
- Auto-capture: per-domain, opt-in, revocable in one click — it uses Chrome permissions you can inspect at chrome://extensions.
Contact
Questions or data requests: open an issue on our repository or email the address listed on the Chrome Web Store listing. We answer deletion requests within 30 days (usually the same day — the delete button is faster).
